It's Hot

So classy!
I was going to post the whole "how Chicken Dinner became chicken dinner" post today, but it is just too darn hot! Over 90 degrees up here with the air on. I am pretty sure the 50+ year old insulation is no longer insulating. I am going downstairs where it is cool, and come back later when it isn't an inferno up here.

Running, Amish Walmart, and Other Delights

So I have apparently let the blog go. And now I'm back to spew forth loads of random tid-bits for you to suffer through enjoy. First things first...running. Jeff and I alternate mornings to run, getting up about 5:30am. Being out so early I see a lot of interesting things. I have found money on several occasions, discovered more about the mysterious ways of bucket man* and have seen more ground hogs than I need to see in a lifetime. I even saw a groundhog about 15 feet up a tree!! So much for the fence around my garden. Maybe I'll hang up a sign stating 'Protected By Smith and Wesson.' Hey, if they can haul their garden-pillaging butts up a tree, you never know if they can read too! But I digress. I have also been buzzed by a bat (took years off my life!) and  encountered two good-sized snapping turtles, the most recent of which was spotted on Sunday morning. I promptly went home and rounded up the kids in their jammies to go see it. Fun times. And this morning I had a very strange encounter with a bird. I heard a bird fly past me, or so I thought. (I am TERRIBLE at hearing where sounds are coming from.) I didn't think anything of it until I saw my shadow ahead of me, complete with the shadow of a bird flying precipitously close to my head. I turned around and it dropped back a little. I kept running, but heard it again. This time I turned around and looked at it, and it flew away. I am pretty sure it mistook my messy curly morning ponytail for a nest. Ha!

*Bucket Man is an older guy who wanders around the neighborhood swinging an orange bucket from his hand. We have yet to figure out what bucket man does with his bucket.

And now, on to Amish Walmart. We went to Lancaster for a few days which turned out to be a not so relaxing mini-vacation. One of our neighbors helpfully informed me that we went on a family trip, not a vacation. There is a difference! Anyway, while we were there we visited a store called Goods. My friend Erin described it as Amish Walmart, and that it is. It is a splendid place where you can buy a vinyl table cloth, fishing waders and Carhartt overalls. You can buy a John Deere hat, or an Amish straw hat. You could buy some toys, and a gun, and fabric all in the same place! There is also an entire aisle of canning supplies. I realize I am probably one of a select few who actually find that exciting. They even have the newly reissued pint and a half size jars. Woo! Living large, I tell you. It is quite the place, and we came out of there with one of those big tin stars they hang on barns and a box of pellets. Amish suspenders not included.

P.S. I went running while we were there and it was the prettiest run ever. The beautiful green farms, the huge white barns, roosters crowing and complimentary eau de bovine. I saw an Amish couple out picking in their garden. The woman had a five gallon bucket she was using to pick peas, and I could only look on in a combination of sympathy and wonder. Sympathy because I know that peas have to be shelled, and wonder because she would probably have them shelled and canned by 9am. Oh, and Jeff found a plastic Power Ranger in a (possibly Amish) graveyard while on his run. Random!

And last but not least, I do believe I mentioned 'other delights' in my title so I must produce. Would you know that Saturday is a big day? THE big day? Yes, it is when Chicken Dinner will pass through the veil (of gravy) and onto our plates. I may or may not have put a little too much thought into the method of preparation for El Pollo Gordo. I mean, if I'm gonna raise a chicken it better be tasty! The preferred method will be grilling at the hand of the Chappy Chapster. Anything he grills tastes pretty much divine, so I am expecting no less from our accidental meat bird. No pressure Dad! :)

Beach!

Yesterday our preschool co-op went on a beach field trip. It was a lot of fun! I realized that having the kids around the ocean freaks me out, but other than that things were peachy. Tyler spent most of his time digging. James played tag with his friend Isaac and they jumped over the incoming waves. Katie mostly busied herself digging and making things out of sand. Sometimes I think she is my exact clone. She spends all day, every day making stuff.

In other news, Tyler is all about bugs. He has some serious ninja fly catching skills. He will stalk them around the house and literally catch them with his bare hands. He does this just about every day. He also has no fear of other bugs, as evidenced by the bee sting he acquired this morning when he tried to hold a bee. I guess he had to learn for himself, but I sure felt bad for him. He cried til he fell asleep in my arms.

Legos As Motivator

James has been begging for Legos lately. Silly me, I didn't realize it cost $29.99 for approximately 150 tiny little pieces, and then an extra $10.99 if you want, say...wheels or a mini-figure. Eek! I have been keeping my eyes peeled but haven't really found any good deals. At the same time, I have been trying to come up with a fun and encouraging way to get James to practice his reading skills over the summer. (yes, my boy is reading!) It dawned on my that I could use legos as a reward for reading, and I ended up ordering some legos on Ebay. Today was the first day of the 'program' and he read to me for FORTY minutes! For a kid just learning to read, that is a long time if you ask me. He did great and needed very little assistance. He even read the book 'Fly Guy,' which is beyond the scope of the words and sounds he has learned at school. I have always loved to read, and it is so fun to listen to him read to me. I am excited for him, just thinking about how many adventures he can go on by reading books. I might run out of legos, but that's a small price to pay. :)

I'm Having A Moment (And Other Randomness)

Lately I have been freaking out about how my baby is going to be three. 3! He is pretty much potty trained (a good thing), and has officially left his crib for the bottom bunk. Waaaa! Where did time go, and anyone want to donate a new baby to our family? That would be great. Last night, Tyler woke up crying. I went to him and he was just sitting there holding his blanket, saying 'I cared' because he can't say the S sound. I laid down with him and pretty soon I was bawling like a baby along with him. It all just hit me that its going waaaaay too fast and I wish I could freeze him in time. Well, except for his terrorist-like tendencies.**

**Tyler managed to throw the camera bag hard enough over the weekend to break the LCD screen of the camera. Good times. At least camera still works, and I will soon get used to using ye olde view finder again.

In other news, Jeff's graduation party is coming up. While I wanted to invite everyone and their uncle, I did restrain myself because I'm pretty sure he would freak out. James is off from school, probably for two weeks as the teachers are allowed to strike for 10 days. Today we met some friends at the CSA and showed them around the farm. James absolutely loved having his friend Isaac there to run and play with. Speaking of growing up, he is old enough to go off exploring and come back in one piece (albeit a little muddy). Tyler touched the electric fence and seemed totally unfazed by it. Should I be surprised? Worried? It was on, as someone else got a shock. Well, enough rambling for now. I fear this post is pretty incoherent but that's all I got for today. :)

Randomness

  • We've been busy...
  • As usual...
  • Except we had a four day weekend...
  • And celebrated my birthday (Jeff took the day off!!!!!)
  • Tyler is doing swimmingly with potty training. He has even...drumroll please...been mostly dry after naps and bed. Does that even happen? Not with my other two. I could get used to this!
  • James has two days of school and then....no! Not the end of school, another teacher strike. Ugh! He will probably be off for two weeks, then have to go back for two weeks to finish up as if they will get anything accomplished after that. I have yet to run into anyone that is in the least bit happy. I won't go off on my soapbox about it, because I'd like my blood pressure to stay where it is, thanks.
  • Katie sounded out the word 'Staples' on a sign the other day. That girl is going to be reading before Kindergarten I think.
  • Today was the last day of Art Lessons and we did a little study of Piet Mondrian. The kids drew animals and filled them in using Mondian's style.
  • And last but not least, El Pollo Gordo, AKA Fat Chicken, or Chicken Dinner, is looking plumper by the day. It won't be long now...

Preschool Art Show

I think I forgot to post pictures of our preschool art show. We had it the beginning of May. I matted the kids' artwork and hung it up, along with labels of artist's name and title. I am pretty sure the kids didn't have a clue what was going on, besides being able to eat lots of food and play in the dirt. :)

James moonlighted in the show, with his scuba diver and fish painting.

Can you spot Katie's lady bug?

The kids

Me and Toothpicks

I keep seeing these cool things on Pinterest revolving around food (like marshmallows or grapes) and toothpicks. The idea is for the kids to build structures by using the food as connectors for the toothpicks. I always see it and think 'oh, how fun,' followed shortly by 'but it involves toothpicks...never mind.' See, I have this weird thing about letting my kids (or not) use toothpicks for any reason. They kind of freak me out! When I was a kid, Mom gave us bologna rolled up and held with toothpicks. We thought that was a delicacy, and happily went outside to munch on them, while simultaneously swinging all over our swing set. It seems that we didn't think through the whole scenario, and haphazardly threw our toothpicks in the grass. Do you know what's coming? Oh, yes, I dropped from the swing set and landed with a toothpick at least half way into my foot. It wasn't one of those cheesy splinter-of-a-toothpick ones, rather one of the nice smooth, sturdy ones. It hurt, and I screamed. Mom stuck her head out the window and kindly recommended I pull it out, which would have been nice had it not been lodged half way to China. Let's just say that if my memory serves me, she had to pull it out with pliers. Makes me cringe just thinking about it. Ack! Aren't you glad you read the blog today? ha! So there is my reasoning for not wanted my kids to play with toothpicks. I should probably get over it, because statistically speaking it probably won't happen again, but still...

Circus Surprise

On Saturday, we loaded the kids up in the car and told them we were going someplace for a surprise. Of course, they were making all sorts of guesses but I knew they would never figure it out. When we pulled in to the parking lot, James looked over in time to see the perfect clue: a real, live elephant! His eyes got all big and he said 'Is that a real elephant? Is this the circus?!' Perfect. The kids loved the circus. Jeff and I, not so much. It was, I imagine, a bit of a low budget circus (all things considered). They had 7 tigers, 3 elephants, and about 10 performers total. There were some really cool things, but there were several stunt 'fails' and uncooperative tigers. A lot of people left at intermission. Fortunately we had found a really good deal on tickets so it wasn't like we paid a bunch of money to see a guy fall off his horse. And really, the kids absolutely loved it and it was fun to watch their faces.

P.S. James had a little incident where he high fived the ground with his face last week. He was running along a rocky part of the green belt and tripped and fell. He managed to skin up his nose, forehead, and even UNDER his nostrils. Impressive. I even had to take some schmutz out of his nose. Of course, every one and their uncle have been asking what happened. Katie told him that he needed to tell people that he got attacked by a 'wolve-ween'.

The Tyler Beast

For the last week or two, we've been having nap/bedtime issues with Tyler. He doesn't want to go to sleep, and comes up with all sorts of shenanigans to keep himself up. I am pretty sure he needs to move to the bottom bunk, which will be a whole new set of issues. The problem with the crib is that he stands on the rail to look out the window and watch his 'chickies.' Or the neighbors. Last night, when they were supposed to be getting ready for bed, we heard them all cracking up. I went to see what they were doing and they were all in the crib, staring out the window at our neighbor who was making faces at them. The neighbor told me this morning that it was hilarious, because he saw Tyler hanging from the curtain rod, and the curtain rod falling, along with Tyler, out of sight. That would explain why the curtain was down. This kid. I am pretty sure he is going to give us a run for our money. Now who wants to come over and train him to STAY in bed? And while you're at it, how about potty training? ;)

The Pallet Fort

For a while now, James has been collecting bits and pieces of lumber. He would beg, borrow or steal anything he could get his hands on to build his fort. After a few months of trash picking and remnant scavenging, he had amassed quite a collection. Everyday he would build a fort, varied slightly from the day before. It began to look as though a band of roving lawn gnomes had taken up residence in our yard, living in shelters cobbled together with feed bags and 2 by 4 scraps. I began to think about other ways of satisfying his desire for a fort, but without the hillbilly effect. Since everyone else is making stuff out of pallets, I figured...why shouldn't I?! Finding pallets proved to be more difficult than I anticipated, as apparently those suckers are a commodity that can be sold back to the recycling people. After trolling craigslist for a while, I found some pallets nearby...and they were actually still available! Woo! I arranged a pick up time and off I went. (Jeff kept the kids at home) Now, here's a little tidbit for you: there is a shortage of trailer parks in these here parts. You almost never see them. Well, whaddayaknow? It was in a trailer park. In the middle of nowhere. Tidbit Numero Dos: In these here parts, the middle of nowhere means at least 8 minutes away from Walmart. So, I pull into unknown trailer park in the middle of 'nowhere,' and find the trailer (a nicely maintained double wide on a street of singles). In the driveway was parked a minivan and I thought, 'Oh, good, must be a family...less chance of ax murderer...' because after all, it is craigslist and that does make me a little nervous. So I approached the door and a lady comes out. Shortly after follows her husband (I assume). They had tattoos and facial piercings and all the trappings of a fairly serious Goth couple, minus the combat boots. I also didn't notice any safety pins on clothing or earlobes. Bonus? Hmmm. So I went around the house with them, and found them to be the most pleasant and chipper freaks I have had the pleasure of speaking with. It was almost like someone took Mr. Rodgers and put him in a  Black Sabbath shirt and pierced his eyebrows. They told me that they had picked up the pallets last year from a church that had been selling pumpkins. Goth couple got them to use in their elaborate haunted house on Halloween. (Thus the fake blood, she explained.) They wanted to keep them but their landlord said they needed to go. I only took six, and as they were helping me load them up I told them what I was going to do with them. They were so thrilled that a little kid would be using them to build a fort. And so we inherited 6 fake-blood spattered pallets for our own. Thank you, friendly Goth couple! Also, thank you for not being ax murderers. And now, since you are all wondering when I am going to S-H-U-T U-P and show you pictures of the darn fort already, here it is:

I am not sure we lost the hillbilly effect, but with a little paint it will look as prim as a white picket fence! (or so I tell myself...)

And guess who lost a tooth last week?!

Lovely Weekend

We had a fun Mother's Day weekend. Saturday we spent pretty much the whole day outside. The kids played and the chickens roamed mostly free while I built a pallet fort and Jeff performed surgery on our tree. We have three beautiful Japanese maples in our yard, and one of them has a disease which led to cankers and apparently if you don't remove the affected branches than the whole tree can die. Hopefully it helps. And the pallet fort? For a while now, I have been looking for pallets and finally found some to build a fort. I will post pictures and story tomorrow.
Today we drank the Bible Fellowship Kool Aid as I like to say, and joined our church.** It's about time, since we've been going there for a year and a half. After church, Jeff surprised me by getting hoagies (Italian hoagies from the best establishment-of-questionable-cleanliness around!) and taking us to Core Creek to picnic and play. It was quite nice. The kids made sure to tell me Happy Mother's Day about a hundred times, and I loved hearing it each time! :) Katie was determined to buy me a plant with her money, so I took her out so she could tell me to 'turn around and not look' while she carefully selected the most beautiful flower. It happened to be a Begonia. On the way out, she decided that she was also going to take me to ice cream. She is always saying she wants to take me, and while I would ordinarily try to talk her out of it I am learning that she loves to give and gets a lot of enjoyment from it. So we went. And the whole time, she kept looking at me with this big ol' grin on her face, saying things like 'You're the best Mom ever!' and 'I love you so much! This is so special!' How sweet is that?! I'll take it! She also made me about a dozen cards, and a few 'craft kits' which involved stuffing blank cards and envelopes into a paper lunch bag. Oh, and James wrote me a note in Sunday School which read: I love you because you make great cookies. :)

**Funny story, after we were introduced in the second service, one of the pastors shook our hands and told Jeff to 'come again when he couldn't stay so long.' Now, this is the Pastor who is always fiddling with his microphone, and as it turns out....his mic was on! Ha, ha! I am not sure if many people caught what he said but it was funny none the less.

Several Orders Of Business

First of all, why do I dread giving my children baths? I mean, isn't spraying them off occasionally with the garden hose good enough? It is dirt season around here, as my freshly mopped floor can attest. (Note: it no longer looks freshly mopped) The kids are quite happy to spend hours a day digging in various sanctioned portions of the yard, and I am mostly happy to oblige. If it keeps them entertained, I'm all for it! But I must confess that if I could harvest the dirt that is clinging to my children right now, as they nap, I could probably start a cabbage patch or something. They are pretty filthy. I even sent them to church yesterday, covered in clean presentable clothing over their dirt streaked legs. Today is the day! Bathe them, I must! It's just that bath time leaves me with muddy footprints on the bathroom floor, which also happens to look like a small tsunami hit it. After which, the children will promptly find a way to besmirch themselves again. Sigh....

Secondly, not to keep harping on this...but TODAY is Jeff's LAST DAY of school EVER!!! After years of people asking 'is he finished yet?' I can finally say yes, he is! I also feel that I should have some sort of honorary degree in Mechanical Engineering for all the years of having him in school. :) The ironic part is, he is getting a degree in something he has been doing for years.

Third, and also Jeff-related. He told me this story the other night and I laughed so hard I cried. He went into the office of his germ-fearing coworker, and had the following one-sided conversation: 'Hey, Dwayne,** have you seen those new scented cakes in the urinals? I really like them. The only thing is, they really bother me when they aren't centered.' (his coworker stares at him) 'Thing is, they are really slippery. I don't know if it's algae growing on them or what, but they are hard to get a hold of.' At that point, his coworker was stunned and stammering his response. I am really thinking I should pin a disclaimer to Jeff's shirt everyday: Warning! Don't take me seriously!

**Name Changed**

Public Service Announcement

We are officially counting down the days, hours and minutes til......Jeff finishes school....FOREVER! (or, as people like to say, until he gets his Master's Degree...which usually gets the 'heck no!' look from Jeff, and groans from the rest of us at the thought of him being back in school again.) It still hasn't really sunk in, but his last class is Monday. Woo!!!!!

Which One Is Dinner? And Other Randomness

Which one of these does not belong? It may be hard to tell, but there are 7 chickens in the box. Three light brown ones, three dark ones, and Fatty.

Here's a better shot of Chicken Dinner next to her hatch mates. You can kind of see how she has no feathers under her wings. Does that mean she'll be easier to pluck? Hmmm, perhaps I shouldn't be counting my eggs before they're hatched...har, har!!! Seriously though, is she just 'big for her age,' or do we have a meat bird on our hands??

And if you made it past my corny chicken jokes, here is a picture of Katie in my wedding dress. She has been wanting to try it on for a long time.

It was a little big...

But she felt like a princess!

James took his chickies out for a little fresh air and get-acquainted session (through the fence) with the older chickens.

And if you've made it all the way to the end, here's a bonus for you! Close up shot of my toe thumbs. Dad told me that they accidentally put toes on my hands. My sister-in-law actually learned in cosmetology school that it is called Club Thumbs...a real 'condition'! So far, I have not been able to collect any government funds or even get a special parking spot for my condition. Bummer. Anyway, the real point of this picture is to say that not only are we getting eggs straight from the backyard, but I pulled my first turnip! It was delicious!

Randomness

  • James wrote me a note today. It says: Mom, I luv uow. I wil hlp uow in the cithcin. Pretty much the best note ever! (Mom, I love you. I will help you in the kitchen.)
  • Saturday we are having an Art Show with our preschool co-op peeps. I am matting the kids' artwork so it all looks nice and fancy. Should be fun!
  • I went to Walmart last night when Jeff got home from work. I kept singing in my head 'These are the people...of Waaaaalmart, who save money, live well, only at Walmart.' (Un?)fortunately I didn't spot anybody particularly worthy of THE PEOPLE OF WALMART site.
  • El Pollo Gordo is looking meatier every day. The sunny side (get it?? ha, ha!) of the situation is that I have learned that I don't want to raise meat chickens. Even though we only have one, I am constantly refilling the feeder. It just sits there and eats and eats and eats. It doesn't even like to stand up much anymore. I really should take a picture and show y'all how big Chicken Dinner is in comparison to its buddies. I can't imagine how big it would be if we had it on special feed. Eek!
  • Jeff's last class is next Monday!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Que the music: School's out for the summer! School's out for-EVA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (enough with the explanation points already! Can you tell I am excited?)

Chicken....Dinner?

When I ordered this last batch of chicks, I ordered a few more than I wanted. The logic behind that was that chances are, I would end up with a rooster, or a loss. So far, no one looks particularly rooster-esque. However, it seems we might have another issue. James' favorite chick, ironically the only one who has been named so far, seems to be a little different. Sunny started out as a cute little ball of light yellow fuzz. Seemingly overnight, she has turned into an over-sized beast. She is larger than all the other chickens and spends her days plopped down by the feed bowl eating herself silly. This, coupled by the fact that her feathers are really sparse and funky, lead me to believe that instead of getting a White Rock like I had ordered, we might have gotten a Cornish Cross, also known as a 'meaty.' These birds are bred specifically to get fat quick and be ready for 'the table' at a very young age. They literally cannot live a long life because their bodies grow too fast and their hearts can't keep up. I am pretty sure in another week or two, if she keeps growing like this, it will be clear whether Sunny will be a short timer at La Groves Chicken Casa. Until further notice, we shall call her Chicken Dinner.

Women's Retreat Decorations

Here are a few pictures of the decorations from the Women's Retreat. My lovely mother made the origami flowers for me (out of maps!) As the retreat went on, the branches were decorated by little scrapbook paper tags. I can't tell you how good it feels to have it all out of my house! :)

Attempted Family Picture

When Erin was here, we made a few noble attempts at a family picture. Do you realize how hard it is to get five people to look at and smile for the camera?

Tyler was not having any of it, and neither was Katie.

Why, let's try it again, shall we? This was part of a green wall that ran down an entire corridor. It was pretty cool. Too bad Tyler didn't want to be seen with us.

Almost!

Random picture of Tyler touching the water

And again...the kids dunked their heads in this.

Looking out over the topiary garden

And here she is, the best of all the shots. No one has a finger up their nose, and no one is crying. Yep, I think that makes it a great family picture! :)

Party's Over (Waaaa!!!)

Our friend Erin left on Friday. Waaa! We had so much fun, despite contracting various ailments. It was so sad to see her go. Erin and I met in 3rd grade, when I got bused into the 'big town' for Triple E, which was a program for little smarties. As a side note, last night I was talking to someone who grew up in a 'small' town. Out of curiosity, I asked her what she meant when she said 'small' town. Forty thousand, she replied, like it was about as one-horse as you could get. I laughed and told her that the town I lived in was about 400 people or so, although it has exceeded 1,000 people in the last several years. Even when we moved to California, the population of our town there was under 1,000 as well. I didn't live in a town with a traffic light til I was in college. But I digress....I did have a point, didn't I? Erin...yes, we had so much fun. She taught Rachel and I how to make Mozzarella cheese, we went to Lancaster together...without kids!, I learned to make curry, Erin got many sewing lessons, we went to Longwood Gardens, and I made my famous fluffy buns!

We read books to the kids, hit the Library book sale, watched funny youtube videos, and stayed up late every night, talking.

And I am pretty sure this might never happen again, but Erin made it her goal to catch me up on my laundry. It was glorious! I was completely caught up, and in fact even now I only have one load to do. Fabulous! We had so much fun, and I hope it won't be another 4 years til we see each other again.

In other news, the Women's Retreat is over. Phew! I am so glad. It was fun, but I am exhausted! I will post a few pictures soon.

Longwood Gardens!

We went to Longwood Gardens yesterday. It was lovely! Here are a few pictures. More to come when things settle down a little. :)

Third Child Syndrome

We recently picked up a new batch of chicks to supplement our egg operation. We currently have 4, which turns out is not enough eggs for us. This batch shall hopefully remedy that, with extra for my parents. In fact, we are running some sort of weird co-op operation, where I take care of the chickens and my parents will be sponsoring a few. Its like 'Adopt-A-Chicken.' Dad has requested that we name their chicks X, Y and Z, but he should know me better by now! At least one of them shall be named Nugget, or something of the like. If you have any witty suggestions, let me know!

This is James' favorite chick, and the only one we have named thus far. Her name is Sunny (as in Sunny Side Up) and she is LOUD! We have already discussed (the chick and I) that if that keeps up, she's gonna be dinner. Sheesh! Actually, she only peeps when she's away from her peeps, and she makes sure everyone knows about it!

Ain't she cute!?

The thing with this second round of chicks is that it's like have a third child. Your first...you bathe them lovingly every night. You never put anything remotely dirty on them, and they are always matching. By the time the second kid comes around, they get a bath twice a week. A little spit up is A-OK, no need to change the clothes. They mostly match. By the time the third one rolls around, they are lucky to get a spit n' shine once a week, maybe a bath if they are lucky. They could roll in the sticky remains of their breakfast oatmeal (which is still on the table at lunch time) and you just wipe them off with a washcloth and call it good. And clothes?! Matching is so last season. That seems to be my approach to this batch of chicks. I checked them for the infamous pasty butt only once or twice. I feed them, water them, and forget about them. The kids do ask to hold them several times a day, so they do get a little lovin'. Tyler is even (remarkably) gentle with them. James is especially smitten with Sunny, and carries her around the house and yard. He lets her play in his play barn, and takes her outside to see her future digs. It is pretty cute.

And speaking of cute! How's this for adorable? Katie also loves herself some chickies.

Adventure

Our friend Erin came on Friday we have had such fun already! We have made cheese with my sister Rachel (awesome!) and had Easter with the whole fam. We visited Tyler Park, dyed Easter Eggs and have read several books. Today she went to DC on the train and will be there for a few days visiting a couple friends there. Then she's back for another round! The only (extremely) annoying thing is that we have been sick for the last 2 1/2 weeks or so. Stomach virus for the kids and I, Jeff with the flu knocked out for a few days, now weird cold-like symptoms and I lost my voice for a few days. I am so sick of being sick! Fortunately I don't feel 'sick,' just this pesky scratchy voice and mild cold-ish symptoms. Oi! I guess I will continue on my anti-bacterial campaign and hope for the best. I shouldn't have been so happy that we got through winter without any major sickness.

Tyler Park: some sort of naturalized daffodils, with the kids frolicking in the background

Cheese! Literally, Erin taught us how to make mozzarella!

I'd Like To Think He Won't Do That Again....

...But this is Tyler we're talking about. This morning, I was getting Tyler dressed and noticed that he had a pretty dark bruise on his deliciously chubby little thigh. Upon closer examination, I noticed two odd marks at the sight of the bruise. I was trying to figure out how he got it. Why do I do that with a kid that is perpetually bruised and banged up? I have no idea. Anywho...the bruise. It dawned on me. Yesterday we had let the chickens out for a frolic in the yard. Tyler, well, he loves his chickies. He was chasing them around as usual, catching them by whatever he could grab, then cradling them in his little arms. The chickens are very good humored about this. The only one that isn't is Big Martha (the one that was attacked) and she is too fast for him anyway. Tyler was wrangling one of his feathered victims, and got pecked! He must have really hurt the hen, because they never peck at him (only when he has a worm in his hand). He was crying pretty loud, and apparently she got him good enough to leave a bruise with two little beak marks on either side. So I asked Tyler where the chicken pecked him, and he pointed right to his thigh. Mystery solved! My neighbor commented that he wouldn't do that again, but this is Tyler we'll dealing with.

And speaking of neighbors, yesterday the kids started to get their energy back. We were playing outside and I remembered that back with the energy comes the bickering. They were fighting over who got to hold a particular chicken and my other neighbor saw them. She tried to get them to share, because she saw I was over in my garden. Shortly thereafter, we went inside. A few minutes later, she called and said there was a 'sanity saver' on the fence for me. I sent one of the kids out and there was a bag with three children's books for the kids. That made my day! :)

And one more thing, then I'll shut up. I promise. We are getting a new batch of chicks tomorrow. If anyone wants to come over and see them in all their fluffy glory, let me know! They're gonna be cute.

Round Two

So, the lovely people of Bible Fellowship seem to be a little too good at sharing, because we've caught round two of the creeping crud. Tyler had it last week, getting sick about 12 hours after being exposed to it. We went to church on Sunday and what do you know?! James and Katie got it that night. They started in within 10 minutes of each other, and it made for another spectacular nights' sleep. I am pretty sure I am going to quarantine the kids for at least a year, or six. My washing machine can't handle all this laundry, and neither can I. Oh, and did I mention that the kids passed it on to me? Oh, yes, it was lovely. Fortunately we are all on the upswing and it is a very fast moving thing. If only the laundry would disappear with it.

And in other random news....Jeff always asks some variation of 'What is this?' or 'What am I supposed to do with this?' when it comes to food. I mean, we have had tacos approximately 2,897 times, and he still asks 'How am I supposed to build this thing?' It drives me nuts.  This morning, I made eggs and toast. He looked at it and asked me 'What is this?' It's not like I am a terrible cook and the food was totally unrecognizable. I don't know why he asks. But anyway, this might surprise you but on occasion I can get a little sarcastic. (ha!) So, when he asked 'What is this?' I replied, 'It's shirt on a shingle.' (Shirt being our code word for...well...) No sooner had I said it then Tyler comes around the corner in his jammies and pipes up 'I want some shirt on a shingle.' And then I heard the bells chiming and the angels swooping down with my Mother of the Year award.

Valley Forge

First of all, I got my wish for a day at home. Tyler got the dreaded stomach bug that is going around like wildfire. Word on the street is that it is only a 24 hour deal, so for that I am grateful. Sleep sounds so nice right about now. Poor little guy is just lethargic on the couch. I am letting him eat a big candy cane, because he hasn't eaten anything since lunch yesterday and it was the only thing he seemed interested in.

A few weeks ago Mom and I threw the kids in the car and went to Valley Forge. James has been asking to go for a while now. It turned out to be a little cold, but we still had fun. The real story of Valley Forge is actually very sad. So many soldiers died there. The docent at the park said that it is a myth that they died from cold. He said they were all good, strong farm boys who knew how to build a cabin and a fire. Instead, disease and lack of food caused the deaths of 2,000 soldiers between 1777 and 1778. The soldier huts have been reconstructed, which are very neat to see. There are three bunks on each side of the fire that are VERY, VERY small. The top bunk is at James' height, and the lower bunks are so tight I don't think a grown man could roll over once he squeezed in.
Here are a few of the artifacts in the museum. The bottom left picture shows what they would strap to their shoes to walk in the mud.
This is one of the soldier huts. Those are the bunks on the wall.

James was thrilled to find a play rifle for sale at the store that was in his price range. He has been wanting a 'hunting gun' for a long time. He has been using just about every day since. In fact, one morning before school he went outside to 'do farm chores.' He came back in and told Jeff had had 'shot like 5 squirrels.' Jeff told him he better go out and pick them all up, because he can't go around leaving dead squirrels everywhere. James had to think for a second before he realized Jeff was joking!

Spring

Spring is here. Warm weather is (mostly) here. And apparently that means I forget I have a blog. Things have been the same ol' around here. I feel like we have been too busy. Women's Retreat stuff, playing outside, preschool, art lessons, Bible study, the continued painting of my living room, and the usual...I just feel like I need a day, or a week of nothing! Good thing my friend Erin is coming soon. I am taking that as my excuse to do nothing but enjoy life. It will be nice!

Our 'Beach'

Here are a few pictures of our newly discovered 'beach.' I have a feeling we will spend a lot of time down there this spring and summer! It is so beautiful right now, as the banks of the creek are covered in happy yellow buttercups. I think Spring might be my favorite season in P-A with all the beautiful blooming trees, and everything getting green again. Even Tyler seems to be happy about the change in scenery and points out all the 'dah-uh-dills' he sees on the walk to school.

I went to check on Katie the other day, and this is what I saw :)
